In the polymerization, the carbon-carbon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pi_bond\">\u03c0 bond<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vinyl_group\">vinyl group<\/a>\u00a0is broken and a new carbon-carbon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sigma_bond\">\u03c3 bond<\/a>\u00a0is formed, attaching to the carbon of another styrene monomer to the chain. Since only one kind of monomer is used in its preparation, it is a homopolymer. The newly formed \u03c3 bond is stronger than the \u03c0 bond that was broken, thus it is difficult to depolymerize polystyrene. About a few thousand monomers typically comprise a chain of polystyrene, giving a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Number_average_molecular_weight\">molecular weight<\/a>\u00a0of 100,000\u2013400,000 g\/mol.<\/p>\n<h2>Different Types of Polystyrene<\/h2>\n<p>The three most important grades of styrene are:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/polymerdatabase.com\/Commercial%20Polymers\/PS.html\">GPPS<\/a>: General purpose polystyrene, also known as crystal-clear polystyrene, is a fully transparent, rigid\u00a0and rather brittle low cost thermoplastic made from styrene monomer. GPPS is a solid product manufactured in the form of 2-5 mm pellets.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/polymerdatabase.com\/Commercial%20Polymers\/PS2.html\"><strong>HIPS<\/strong><\/a>: High impact polystyrene contains usually 5 to 10% rubber (butadiene) and is used for parts which require high(er) impact resistance. HIPS is a graft copolymer having polystyrene sidearms. The grafting occurs when some of the radicals react with the double bonds of the polybutadiene.<br \/>\n<strong><u>EPS<\/u><\/strong>: Expandable polystyrene consists of micro-pellets or beads containing a blowing agent (usually pentane).
