Benzene<\/strong> is an important organic chemical compound with the chemical formula C6<\/sub>H6<\/sub>. Its molecule is composed of 6 carbon atoms joined in a ring, with 1 hydrogen atom attached to each carbon atom. Because its molecules contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms, benzene is classed as a hydrocarbon. It is mainly used as a precursor to heavy chemicals, such as ethylbenzene and cumene.<\/p>\n

Benzene<\/strong> is a natural constituent of\u00a0crude oil<\/a>\u00a0and is one of the elementary\u00a0petrochemicals<\/a>. Due to the cyclic continuous\u00a0pi bonds<\/a>\u00a0between the carbon atoms, benzene is classed as an\u00a0aromatic hydrocarbon<\/a>, the second [n]-annulene<\/a>\u00a0([6]-annulene). It is sometimes abbreviated\u00a0Ph<\/a>H. Benzene is a\u00a0colorless<\/a>\u00a0and highly\u00a0flammable<\/a>\u00a0liquid with a sweet smell, and is responsible for the aroma around petrol (gasoline) stations. As benzene has a high\u00a0octane number<\/a>, aromatic derivatives like\u00a0toluene<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0xylene<\/a>\u00a0typically comprise up to 25% of\u00a0gasoline<\/a>\u00a0(petrol). Benzene itself has been limited to less than 1% in gasoline because it is a known human\u00a0carcinogen<\/a>. Most non-industrial applications have been limited as well for the same reason.<\/p>\n
