Its molecule is composed of 6 carbon atoms joined in a ring, with 1 hydrogen atom attached to each carbon atom. Because its molecules contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms, benzene is classed as a hydrocarbon. It is mainly used as a precursor to heavy chemicals, such as ethylbenzene and cumene.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benzene<\/strong> is a natural constituent of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petroleum\">crude oil<\/a>\u00a0and is one of the elementary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petrochemical\">petrochemicals<\/a>. Due to the cyclic continuous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pi_bond\">pi bonds<\/a>\u00a0between the carbon atoms, benzene is classed as an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aromatic_hydrocarbon\">aromatic hydrocarbon<\/a>, the second [n]-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annulene\">annulene<\/a>\u00a0([6]-annulene). It is sometimes abbreviated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phenyl\">Ph<\/a>H. Benzene is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Color\">colorless<\/a>\u00a0and highly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flammable\">flammable<\/a>\u00a0liquid with a sweet smell, and is responsible for the aroma around petrol (gasoline) stations. As benzene has a high\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Octane_number\">octane number<\/a>, aromatic derivatives like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toluene\">toluene<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xylene\">xylene<\/a>\u00a0typically comprise up to 25% of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gasoline\">gasoline<\/a>\u00a0(petrol). Benzene itself has been limited to less than 1% in gasoline because it is a known human\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carcinogen\">carcinogen<\/a>.
