Mixtures labelled\u00a0naphtha\u00a0have been produced from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_gas_condensate\">natural gas condensates<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petroleum_distillate\">petroleum distillates<\/a>, and the distillation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coal_tar\">coal tar<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peat\">peat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In different industries and regions\u00a0naphtha\u00a0may also be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crude_oil\">crude oil<\/a>\u00a0or refined products such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kerosene\">kerosene<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mineral_spirits\">Mineral spirits<\/a>, also historically known as &#8220;naphtha&#8221;, is not the same chemical.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uses <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Naphtha is used to dilute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heavy_crude_oil\">heavy crude oil<\/a>\u00a0to reduce its viscosity and enable\/facilitate transport; undiluted heavy crude cannot normally be transported by pipeline, and may also be difficult to pump onto\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oil_tanker\">oil tankers<\/a>. Other common dilutants include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural-gas_condensate\">natural-gas condensate<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light_crude_oil\">light crude<\/a>. However, naphtha is a particularly efficient dilutant and can be recycled from diluted heavy crude after transport and processing.
