Fuel oil<\/strong>\u00a0(also known as\u00a0heavy oil,\u00a0marine fuel\u00a0or\u00a0furnace oil) is a\u00a0fraction<\/a>\u00a0obtained from\u00a0petroleum<\/a>\u00a0distillation<\/a>, either as a\u00a0distillate<\/a>\u00a0or a\u00a0residue<\/a>. In general terms, fuel oil is any\u00a0liquid fuel<\/a>\u00a0that is burned in a\u00a0furnace<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0boiler<\/a>\u00a0for the generation of heat or used in an\u00a0engine<\/a>\u00a0for the generation of power, except oils having a\u00a0flash point<\/a>\u00a0of approximately 42\u00a0\u00b0C (108\u00a0\u00b0F) and oils burned in cotton or wool-wick burners. Fuel oil is made of long\u00a0hydrocarbon<\/a>\u00a0chains, particularly\u00a0alkanes<\/a>,\u00a0cycloalkanes<\/a>, and\u00a0aromatics<\/a>. The term\u00a0fuel oil\u00a0is also used in a stricter sense to refer only to the heaviest commercial fuel that can be obtained from\u00a0crude oil<\/a>, i.e., heavier than\u00a0gasoline<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0naphtha<\/a>. Small molecules like those in\u00a0propane<\/a>,\u00a0naphtha<\/a>,\u00a0gasoline<\/a>\u00a0for cars, and\u00a0jet fuel<\/a>\u00a0(kerosene) have relatively low\u00a0boiling points<\/a>, and they are removed at the start of the\u00a0fractional distillation<\/a>\u00a0process. Heavier petroleum products like\u00a0diesel fuel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0lubricating oil<\/a>\u00a0are much less volatile and distill out more slowly, while bunker oil is literally the bottom of the barrel; in oil distilling, the only things denser than bunker fuel are\u00a0carbon black<\/a>\u00a0feedstock and\u00a0bituminous<\/a>\u00a0residue (asphalt<\/a>), which is used for paving roads and sealing roofs.<\/p>\n
