Sulfur is considered an undesirable contaminant because, when burned, it generates\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinseyenergyinsights.com\/resources\/refinery-reference-desk\/sox\/\">sulfur oxides<\/a>. Consequently, most finished petroleum products have a limit on how much sulfur they can contain, making sulfur removal an important part of the overall\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinseyenergyinsights.com\/resources\/refinery-reference-desk\/refining\/\">refinery<\/a>\u00a0process. Sulfur can also harm some of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinseyenergyinsights.com\/resources\/refinery-reference-desk\/catalyst\/\">catalysts<\/a>\u00a0used in refining\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinseyenergyinsights.com\/resources\/refinery-reference-desk\/process-units\/\">process units<\/a>\u00a0so it must be removed from some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinseyenergyinsights.com\/resources\/refinery-reference-desk\/intermediates\/\">intermediate<\/a>\u00a0streams before they can be fed to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinseyenergyinsights.com\/resources\/refinery-reference-desk\/conversion-processes\/\">conversion unit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a general rule, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinseyenergyinsights.com\/resources\/refinery-reference-desk\/crude-grades\/\">crude oil grade<\/a>\u00a0with high sulfur content will have a lower value.
