Methanol is a key component in the manufacture of hundreds of other chemicals, solvents and other formulations. Approximately 40% of methanol is converted into formaldehyde which is in turn used in the manufacture of a diverse range of products such as plastics, paints, textiles, pigments and dyes. The conversion entails oxidation:<\/p>\n<p>2 CH<sub>3<\/sub>OH + O<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0\u2192 2 CH<sub>2<\/sub>O + 2 H<sub>2<\/sub>O<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acetic_acid\">Acetic acid<\/a>\u00a0can be produced from methanol.<\/p>\n<p>Methanol and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isobutene\">isobutene<\/a>\u00a0are combined to give\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Methyl_tert-butyl_ether\">methyl\u00a0tert-butyl ether<\/a>\u00a0(MTBE). MTBE is a major octane booster in gasoline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methanol to hydrocarbons, olefins, gasoline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Condensation of methanol to produce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrocarbon\">hydrocarbons<\/a>\u00a0and even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aromatic_hydrocarbon\">aromatic<\/a>\u00a0systems is the basis of several technologies related to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gas_to_liquids\">gas to liquids<\/a>. These include methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH), methanol to gasoline (MTG), and methanol to olefins (MTO), and methanol to propylene (MTP).
