Methanol<\/strong> is a light, colorless, volatile and flammable liquid, produced by International Methanol Company (IMC). Methanol is a key component in the manufacture of hundreds of other chemicals, solvents and other formulations. Approximately 40% of methanol is converted into formaldehyde which is in turn used in the manufacture of a diverse range of products such as plastics, paints, textiles, pigments and dyes. Methanol is also used to manufacture acetic acid, the fuel additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), biodiesel and increasingly as a feedstock for new methanol to olefins plants.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Methanol is used as a precursor to other\u00a0commodity chemicals<\/a>, including\u00a0formaldehyde<\/a>,\u00a0acetic acid<\/a>,\u00a0methyl tert-butyl ether<\/a>, as well as a host of more specialized chemicals.<\/p>\n

Methanol is primarily converted to\u00a0formaldehyde<\/a>, which is widely used in many areas, especially polymers. The conversion entails oxidation:<\/p>\n

2 CH3<\/sub>OH + O2<\/sub>\u00a0\u2192 2 CH2<\/sub>O + 2 H2<\/sub>O<\/p>\n

Acetic acid<\/a>\u00a0can be produced from methanol.<\/p>\n

Methanol and\u00a0isobutene<\/a>\u00a0are combined to give\u00a0methyl\u00a0tert-butyl ether<\/a>\u00a0(MTBE). MTBE is a major octane booster in gasoline.<\/p>\n

Methanol to hydrocarbons, olefins, gasoline<\/strong><\/p>\n

Condensation of methanol to produce\u00a0hydrocarbons<\/a>\u00a0and even\u00a0aromatic<\/a>\u00a0systems is the basis of several technologies related to\u00a0gas to liquids<\/a>. These include methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH), methanol to gasoline (MTG), and methanol to olefins (MTO), and methanol to propylene (MTP). These conversions are catalyzed by\u00a0zeolites<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0heterogeneous catalysts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gasoline additive<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0European Fuel Quality Directive<\/a>\u00a0allows fuel producers to blend up to 3% methanol, with an equal amount of cosolvent, with gasoline sold in Europe.\u00a0China<\/a>\u00a0uses more than 4.5 billion liters of methanol per year as a transportation fuel in low level blends for conventional vehicles, and high level blends in vehicles designed for methanol fuels.<\/p>\n
