LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG)

Liquefied Petroleum Gas ( LPG ) is Composed of Propane (C3) & butane (C4). LPG can be used domestically to generate heat or to give light. Also, It can be used as fuel to some vehicles (mainly in Europe). In the refining & petrochemical industry, it could be used as feed for units such as the HPU (hydrogen production plant) and/or to be fed to steam cracker to produce derivatives (derivatives are main components to produce Plastics).

Varieties of LPG bought and sold include mixes that are mostly propane (C3H8), mostly butane (C4H10), and, most commonly mixes including both propane and butane. In the northern hemisphere winter, the mixes contain more propane, while in summer, they contain more butane.

Natural Gas Processing

When gas is drawn from the earth, it is a mixture of several gases and liquids. Commercial natural gas is mainly composed of methane. However, it also contains ethane, propane and butane in accordance with the specifications for natural gas in each country in which it is distributed.

Therefore, before natural gas is marketed, some NGLs, including LPG (propane & butane) are separated out, depending on the ”wetness” of the gas produced: NGLs represent 1 to 10% of the unprocessed gas stream.
