POLYPROPYLENE (PP)

Polypropylene (PP), also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications. It is produced via chain-growth polymerization from the monomer propylene.

Polypropylene belongs to the group of polyolefins and is partially crystalline and non-polar. Its properties are similar to polyethylene, but it is slightly harder and more heat resistant. It is a white, mechanically rugged material and has a high chemical resistance.[1]

Polypropylene is the second-most widely produced commodity plastic (after polyethylene).

POLYPROPYLENE (PP) Products

There are 2 main types of polypropylene, namely Homopolymer and Copolymers (random and block).

Homopolymer polypropylene can be described as a General Purpose polymer, with the main applications in packaging, textiles, healthcare, pipes, automotive and electrical applications. Polypropylene Random Copolymers (ethylene comonomer) are flexible and optically clear, making them suitable for applications requiring transparency and excellent appearance. Polypropylene Block Copolymers are tougher and less brittle than Random Copolymers, and are suitable for applications requiring high strength.

Overall, polypropylene finds uses in the following end use applications.

  • Packaging – both flexible packaging (food packaging, electronic films, closures) and rigid packaging (containers).
  • Consumer goods – examples include houseware goods, furniture, appliances, toys.
  • Automotive applications – examples include bumpers, battery cases, instrument panels, interior and door trims.
  • Fibers and fabrics – examples include raffia, strapping, rope and twine.
  • Medical applications – examples include disposable syringes and a broad range of containers designed for medical uses.
  • Industrial applications – examples include chemical tanks, plastic sheets and pipes.
